These are water color paintings of doilies that my Nan, Geraldine, created and embroidered in her, 'Decorative Needlework' class, back when she was at school.
I love the fragility of them and the imperfection that comes from the handmade.
I wanted to paint them as a tribute to my beautiful Nan and as a vehicle to explore the existence of, 'sentimentality' in my own life and in the lives of others.

I saw your work in Frankie and was touched by your sentimentality and idea of preserving the doilies through delicate painting. I have a small collection form my nana, and I feel a connection to her whenever I use them. One is the same as the one seen second from the top; it must have been the pattern of the day. A patience and skill I don't possess, but certainly appreciate, especially in this day of mass production and rampant busyness. A beautiful reflection of a still moment.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your beautiful comment, Sally. I have had quite a few people say to me that they recognise the designs- I think there may have been patterns that went around the school curriculum for the subject of Decorative Needlework.

Your paintings of your nan's handmade doilies are just delightful! There is just something so special about a handmade doily which the commercially-made ones just don't have.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Deb! I agree, there is so much more value in the handmade! I think it is the intricacies and imperfections through human touch that make an object truly beautiful! xx
